Chat and AI
Which files can the AI read?
Attach a file with the paperclip, or point the AI at a file you keep in Files
| File | What the AI does with it |
|---|---|
| PDF, Word (.docx), OpenDocument (.odt) | Reads the text |
| Excel (.xlsx, .xls), OpenDocument (.ods), CSV | Reads the tables and can search and calculate |
| PowerPoint (.pptx) | Reads the text of every slide |
| Pictures (PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF) | Sees the picture: describes it, reads text in it, answers questions about it |
| Audio (MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG and others) | Listens and works from the transcript |
| Text, Markdown, JSON, HTML, code | Reads it as it is |
| ZIP, RAR, 7z and TAR archives | Browse what is inside or unpack it into a folder next to the archive |
| Anything else, such as video or older formats | Opens it with Python when you ask what is inside |
Good to know:
- Long documents: the AI starts with the beginning of each file and reads further when your question needs it. Naming the section or page helps
- Many files: the first 10 files of a message are read straight away, the rest when they are needed
- Size: documents up to 20 MB, pictures up to 10 MB and recordings up to 25 MB are read directly. For bigger ones, up to 1 GB each, ask the AI to process the file with code and it uploads them behind the scenes
